A Brief Look at Federal Drug Classification

Drugs, certain chemicals and some substances are divided into categories. These five categories are divided in such a way that each drug in the category has the same acceptable medical use, potential for abuse and possible dependency. The most important factor in determining which category a drug will be placed in is its potential for dependency. Here is a brief outline.

Schedule I

Schedule I drugs, chemicals and substances have no accepted medical use. They also have a high potential for abuse. Some of the drugs listed in this category are: heroin, marijuana, ecstasy, LSD, peyote and methaqualone.

Schedule II

Schedule II drugs, chemicals and substances have a higher than normal potential for abuse. The continued use of these substances can lead to dependence. Some examples are: Vicodin, methamphetamine, cocaine, hydromorphone, methadone, oxycodone, Adderall, Ritalin and fentanyl.

Schedule III

Schedule III drugs, chemicals and substances have a low to moderate potential for dependence. There is still a possibility of abuse. Some examples are: Tylenol with codeine, anabolic steroids, ketamine and testosterone.

Schedule IV

Schedule IV drugs, chemicals and substances have a low risk of abuse and dependence. Some examples are: Darvocet, Talwin, Tramadol, Ambien, Xanax and Soma.

Schedule V

Schedule V drugs, chemicals and substances may have a potential for abuse and dependence but it is considered very low. Drugs in this category are used for typical medical conditions. Some examples are: Robitussin AC, Motofen, Parepectolin, Lyrica and Lomotil.
