A Rundown of Georgia Gun Laws

Every state in the nation has laws surrounding firearms, and Georgia is no different. State laws dictate when you need a license, where you are permitted to carry your weapon and the different consequences of breaking any gun laws. Here is what the state of Georgia has to say about your right to own and carry a firearm.

Licensure

Any adult in Georgia who is legally able to do so may store a firearm in their home, business or motor vehicle without having to hold a valid license. Any person who intends to carry their firearm outside of those places is required to apply for and obtain a license to do so. If the gun you have is used for hunting, you only need a hunting license to be permitted to carry your weapon off of your property.

Registration

There are currently only six states in the nation that require the registration of handguns and other firearms. Georgia is not one of those states. People who purchase or inherit a firearm in Georgia are not required to register that weapon with any governing body.

Types of Weapons Permitted

Georgia does not have its own ban on any type of firearm. People are permitted to own any weapon they like as long as they are:

  • Not restricted by law from owning a firearm
  • Abiding by the National Firearms Act

Criminal Charges

Certain acts with firearms are considered to be criminal. You may be charged with a misdemeanor if you:

  • Carry a gun outside of your own property without a Georgia Weapons License
  • Point a pistol at another person intentionally and without legal justification to do so
  • Fire a weapon within 50 yards of a public street or highway without legal justification
  • Fire a weapon on the property of another without permission to do so
  • Fire a weapon when you are under the influence of alcohol

You may be charged with a felony if you:

  • Provide a minor with a firearm for illegal purposes
  • Persuade or solicit a dealer to provide a firearm to anyone but an actual buyer
  • Alter a weapons carry license or carry a counterfeit or altered license

If you are arrested and charged with carrying a weapon improperly or without a license, you need an experienced attorney on your side.
