Abby Womach Arrested for DUI

Abby Wambach, one of the women often credited with being responsible for propelling US women’s soccer to global fame, was arrested for driving under the influence in Portland, Oregon last week.

Wambach was booked into the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and released on her own recognizance after being charged with the misdemeanor.

According to a release from Portland police, Wambach failed to stop for a red light in her 2014 Range Rover just after 11 p.m. An officer observed signs that the soccer star was under the influence and requested that Wambach perform field sobriety tests. Wambach complied and failed those tests. She was placed under arrest and later failed a breath test. Police say that Wambach was cooperative throughout her arrest.

The retired soccer player released an apology on her Facebook page:

“Those that know me, know that I have always demanded excellence from myself. I have let myself and others down. I take full responsibility for my actions. This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated. I am so sorry to my family, friends, fans and those that look to follow a better example.”

Wambach retired from the U.S. national team after her final game on December 16, 2015 against China.
