DUI Enforcement Initiative Being Launched in Georgia

There is an effort across the nation aiming to get drunk drivers off of the road. The initiative kicked off in Georgia before Labor Day in an effort to make the state safe for the holiday weekend. As families gathered to celebrate the “official” end to summer, police and other law enforcement officials joined the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

The campaign ran through September 5. In the time Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over took place, law enforcement increased patrols and added additional sobriety checkpoints. In doing this, law enforcement agencies joined the nationwide effort to reduce the number of drunk driving related fatalities.

Officers increased their visibility, but also offered useful tips to those who may have gone out partying. They were quick to advise members of the public to install “Drive Sober, Georgia” on their smart phones. The app provides a lengthy list of sober ride programs, allowing drivers an easy option in choosing a safer way to get home.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 8,931 alcohol-related accidents in Georgia during the year 2014. Those crashes resulted in thousands of injuries and 165 deaths. During Labor Day weekend of the same year, 40 percent of deaths that occurred across the nation as a result of car crashes involved alcohol.

The statistics for arrests made over the holiday weekend have not been released as of yet.
