Georgia Tech Student Suffers Brain Injury

A young man was struck while riding his bicycle on the campus of Georgia Tech on June 26. The student was hit by a truck that failed to yield. The driver was cited in the accident. The man struck sustained a traumatic brain injury.

The young man was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Doctors performed an emergency surgical procedure and placed him in a medically induced coma. The procedure was undertaken in order to relieve pressure on the man’s brain. A later brain scan revealed that the victim was experiencing seizures.

Friends and family of the young man were at his side in the hospital, taking turns so that he was not alone. Those visiting him speak to him to let him know that they are there. Speaking to comatose patients is thought to stimulate brain activity.

A fundraiser has been set up for the family in preparation of the astronomical costs associated with treating injuries of this nature. The fund has been set up by a family friend who had a daughter suffer the same type of injuries in 2013. Each brain injury is unique and there is no prediction on when or how the young man will recover.

When the victim reaches a certain point in his recovery, he will begin the process of therapy. The type and frequency of therapy will depend on his condition at that time.
