Have You Been Injured In A Side-Impact Collision?

CarAcc3

There’s no such thing as a “minor” car accident. Even in car accidents that appear to cause little damage to the vehicles, a significant amount of force has been exerted on the occupants. However, when it comes to side-impact collisions, there are really no minor accidents. Vehicle occupants are rarely more vulnerable to injury than they are in side-impact collisions. If you have suffered injuries as a result of being struck by another driver in an accident that was not your fault, it’s important that you are able to hold the other driver legally responsible for their negligence and get the compensation that you need to recover and move on with your life. In most cases, the best way to do this is by bringing a personal injury lawsuit. These lawsuits are designed to restore you to the financial position that you would have been in had the accident never occurred. If you have been injured in this kind of accident and need help obtaining the financial support that you need, it is a good idea to consult with an experienced Atlanta personal injury attorney as soon as possible.

What is a Side-Impact Collision?

Side-impact collisions, also known as “T-bone” collisions, occur when one vehicle runs head-on into the side of another vehicle, creating the shape of a T. These accidents are particularly damaging and dangerous because vehicles have so little protection on their sides. When vehicles collide from the front, there are several feet of metal, engines, and airbags that stand between the driver and the collision, but few vehicles have side airbags, and most only have a door that is a few inches thick and cannot physically withstand the impact of another vehicle traveling at a high speed. As a result, the injury and fatality rate for these accidents is very high. Common injuries sustained in side-impact collisions include broken bones, fractured skull, traumatic brain injuries, injuries to the neck and chest, and other life-threatening injuries. The risk of fatal and catastrophic injuries is increased if there is a disparity in the sizes of the two vehicles. For instance, if an SUV “t-bones” a standard sedan, the bumper of the SUV is likely to be at the same level as the head of the passenger or driver when it collides with the side of the car. This dramatically increases the risk of death.

Causes of Side-Impact Collisions

Most side-impact collisions occur at intersections, and are generally caused by one car ignoring a traffic signal such as a stop sign or red light. These accidents also commonly occur when one vehicle is attempting to speed through a yellow light before it turns red. This means that almost all side-impact collisions are avoidable, and would not occur were it not for one driver’s negligence.
