Local Accident Leaves Six Injured

An accident earlier this month left a Barrow County Sheriff’s deputy and five other people injured. The two-vehicle accident occurred in Winder during a pursuit of a person suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to reports, the crash occurred at Athens Street and North Broad Street. The six injured people all received treatment at area hospitals for minor injuries. The accident happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. The deputy was pursuing a vehicle that had been observed on the wrong side of the road. Because of that driver’s actions, others were forced off of the roadway. Luckily, no one outside of those involved in the accident were injured.

The pursuit that started on Georgia Highway 82 sent the deputy through a red light. His car was hit on the passenger side by an SUV that was crossing through the intersection. The SUV contained a driver and four passengers. It is unknown whether the deputy had his overhead lights or sirens activated at the time of the accident. Even though the suspect drove away from the scene, the person was later identified and is being sought by police.
