Pedestrian Struck By Car Did Not Have Right of Way

A teenager was struck by a car on July 11. Atlanta police are saying that the teen did not have the right of way when she was hit.

According to reports, a driver was traveling on Metropolitan Parkway in the southbound direction. The teenager is said to have darted into traffic and was struck. The light at the intersection of University Avenue was green and turning yellow. Because of the action of the traffic light, the pedestrian crossing signal would have indicated not to walk.

Witnesses to the accident corroborated the account, saying that the teen did not have the right of way. The teen was transported to a local hospital from the scene, suffering with leg and arm injuries.

This accident was the second of the day in which a person was hit by a vehicle. Another woman was struck at the intersection of Morosgo Drive and Piedmont Road. That woman succumbed to her injuries at a local hospital.

Officials are urging both pedestrians and drivers to be sure they are following the rules of the road. While pedestrians do often have the right of way, that is not the case when a signal is “telling” a pedestrian not to cross an intersection. Nevertheless, drivers should be cautious at intersections, especially if they see a pedestrian on the corner.
