Staying Safe on St. Patricks Day

St. Patrick’s Day is cause for celebration, if you are like millions of people around the world, you will be partying with friends and family this holiday. Unfortunately, if you are like thousands, you will be paying for your activities long after March 18th rolls around.

While there is certainly nothing wrong with celebrating the luck of the Irish, you shouldn’t be any less cautious than you would be normally. In fact, you may want to be even more aware than you would be on any other night. With the amount of people that will be out on the town, your chances for accident and injury are even higher.

Staying safe on St. Patrick’s Day doesn’t have to put a damper on your night. Follow these easy tips to make sure you not only get home safely, but that you wake up happy and healthy.

  1. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

No matter where you go, keep your wits about you. Know who is around you whether you are driving, walking or taking public transportation. Stay focused on the task at hand and avoid distractions.

  1. Keep It to Yourself

Sitting in a bar or walking down the street…keep your belongings to yourself. Don’t flash your cash and keep your wallet tucked in a front pocket. If you are carrying a purse, where it across your body and hold onto your bag in front of you…don’t let it sit on your hip or hitch a ride on your behind.

  1. Know Your Limits

Green beer. It’s something that people look forward to all year, but you should know your limits. Make sure that you are eating when you drink, and consider having a glass of water in between drinks. When you have hit your limit, stop. It really is that simple.

  1. Arrange for a Ride

It is far easier to find a ride before you have had too much to drink. Designate a sober driver, decide which cab company you will use, or put a family member on speed dial. You have several choices when it comes to avoiding drinking and driving…use at least one of them.

You can certainly enjoy yourself on St. Patrick’s Day, but you shouldn’t do though at the expense of your safety or that of others. Taking the necessary precautions will help to ensure that you aren’t forced to deal with the consequences of poor choices long after the holiday is over.
