Woman Struck After Getting Off MARTA Bus

A woman stepped off a MARTA bus on January 12 and was killed a short time later. The woman was struck by two vehicles as she crossed a road.

According to police reports, the 54-year-old woman was crossing North Point Parkway when she was hit by a pickup truck and then an SUV. The incident occurred just before 7:00 a.m. The woman was an employee at a nearby Verizon store.

Because of a lack of light that early in the morning, both drivers thought that they had struck road debris. Each remained on scene, cooperating with investigators. A spokesperson for the police department said that it was believed that the incident was a “horrible accident,” and that no charges would be pending in the case.

A MARTA spokeswoman said that the driver of the bus was unaware that the woman had been hit and continued on with the route. North Point Parkway was closed for several hours while police processed the scene. Several bus routes were redirected as police conducted their investigation into the incident.

It was not immediately reported if the woman had been in a marked crosswalk at the time of the accident. However, it is assumed, because charges are not being considered, that she was not.
