Wrong Way Crash Results in DUI

Drivers on U.S. 17 were surprised to find another vehicle coming at them from the wrong direction one recent Friday night. The end result was a Douglas woman being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on the wrong side of the road.

According to a report by Georgia State Patrol, Erica Coleman, 30, turned the wrong way onto U.S. 17. As a result of driving into oncoming traffic, Coleman struck a motorcyclist, causing injury to the male operator. Coleman was operating her vehicle without a license, had an open container of alcohol in her vehicle and obstructed a law enforcement officer during her arrest.

The accident happened at 10:39 p.m. when Coleman pulled out of a motel and drove north in the southbound lane. She attempted a left turn into a parking lot, turning in front of Gregory Bailey, 21, driving a 2015 Suzuki motorcycle. Bailey suffered a fractured femur and internal injuries. He was transported to the hospital from the scene.

Coleman will appear in court to answer to her five charges on an unknown date.
