Most Dangerous States for Drunk Driving

People drink and drive everywhere in the United States, but there is a higher-than-average instance of DUI arrests in certain states. Alcohol consumption and bad weather work in conjunction to make several states in the nation more dangerous than others when it comes to drunk driving, according to a survey conducted by USA Today.

North Dakota tops the nation in fatalities and arrests related to drunk driving as of 2015. Montana was second, followed by Idaho, Wisconsin, South Carolina and South Dakota. Tyler Spraul, director of the study, said, “I think that the combination of higher than average alcohol consumption and a higher chance of running into dangerous driving conditions with sleet, snow, and ice during the winter months could be the reason that we’re seeing so many of those northern states rank poorly.”

Many of these states have launched campaigns aimed at reducing the instance of drunk driving. In North Dakota, law enforcement targets underage drinking during graduation and prom seasons. Montana has turned its focus toward drunk drivers during the early months of the year when drunk driving appears to be at its highest.

CarInsuranceComparison.com also conducted a study, finding the same states to be the most dangerous. They ranked states according to:

  • Driving fatalities
  • Arrests for DUI
  • Penalties for DUI
  • Cost per fatality
  • Laws that discourage drunk driving

The truth of the matter is that if you drive down any road in the nation, you run the risk of encountering a drunk driver. It is in the states mentioned above that your risk is higher.
