Getting Home Safely on St. Patrick’s Day

You have your green T-shirt. You’ve gathered your group of friends. You know where you will be going to celebrate. You are well-prepared for St. Patrick’s Day. But, you may have forgotten one detail: how you will be getting home.

When you are finalizing your plans for St. Patrick’s Day, you need to make sure that you are also planning for a safe ride home. There are several ways that you can get home without having to get behind the wheel, all of which will make sure that you get home happy and healthy. St. Patrick’s day is one week from today — start planning now! Here are just a few ways that partygoers can get from the celebration back home.

1. AAA

Have you heard of the Tow to Go program offered by AAA? It started in 1998 and was designed as a way to get people and their vehicles home safely. If you are partying within a 10-mile distance of your home, a tow truck will come to your destination, hook up your vehicle and transport it — and you — home.

2. Ride Sharing

Don’t be shy about asking a driver from Uber or Lyft to pick you up. These drivers are screened for your safety and are everyday men and women working for their money. Holidays are big nights for ride-sharing drivers, so be prepared to request your ride before you actually need it. In addition, ridesharing services usually increase their prices on busy nights, so be prepared to pay more.

3. Designated Driver

There is usually one person in a group who is happy (or at least willing) to act as a designated driver. You may have to foot the bill for the night — as in buying the designated driver dinner and dessert — but it’s far cheaper than the cost of a driving under the influence conviction. Before you settle on a different ride home, poll your group and find out if anyone is willing to act as the safe ride.

4. Taxi

Believe it or not, taxis are still a real thing. Many people forget that taxis are an option now that Uber and Lyft are on the scene. A taxi may even be a cheaper option, since (as we mentioned before) ride-sharing drivers often jack up their rates on major holidays. A quick search of the Internet will give you local taxi companies. Better yet, find a local company before you go out and program their number in your phone.

5. Someone You Know

Not everyone you know will be going out to celebrate the holiday. You may have a friend or relative that is willing to be on standby to pick you up and take you home. Better yet, if you can find two people, one can drive your car and one can drive you. Arrange this before you go out for the evening to avoid being turned down.

Getting home safely on St. Patrick’s Day isn’t a difficult thing to do. If you plan on going out, plan on getting home. Any of the tips above can help to ensure that you will get home as healthy as you were when you left.
