Driver Charged in Deadly Accident
A man has been charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree following the death of a child in a multi-vehicle accident on Ga. 316. The driver was also charged with following too closely.
According to reports, the man was traveling in the far left lane of the highway. He was following his GPS which alerted him to heavy traffic. The GPS the man was using suggested that he get off the highway at the next exit to avoid that traffic. Because the man was in the left lane, he needed to merge into the right lane.
The man looked over his shoulder to ensure the way was clear and then turned his attention forward again. When he did so, he saw the minivan in front of him coming to a stop. The man did not have enough time to stop his own vehicle and crashed into the back of the minivan, causing injury to a child in the third-row passenger seat.
As a result of the crash, the minivan was sent into the rear of the car in front of it. A car traveling behind the truck did not have enough time to avoid a collision and hit the rear of the truck. Several people were injured as a result of the accident with some refusing medical attention. The child who was killed died at a local hospital where she was transported due to her serious injuries.
