Daylight Savings Time Increases Your Risk for Accidents

Chances are you already know that a decreased awareness behind the wheel can cause vehicle collisions. When you aren’t paying close attention to the cars around you when you are driving, you are either at risk for being involved in a crash or causing one. Daylight saving time doesn’t help.

If you are like many people, you are feeling a bit “off” next week. Experts say that’s normal. It can take the human body a week or more to adjust to the time changes in the Spring and Fall. The good news is there are things you can do to help your body adjust.

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and eat healthy meals. Stick with your normal bedtime and wake time for at least two days, no matter what the clock says. Gradually adjust each by 15 minutes until the time you go to bed and the time you wake up match the clock. This is definitely easier to do when we fall back, so you’re in luck. In the Spring, you can adjust your times in the week leading up to the time change.

When you do these things, which are really simple if you think about it, you are helping your body adjust rather than jarring it into new habits too quickly. You should also pay a bit more attention to your driving habits this week and next. Stay aware of what you are doing and what is going on around you. Being just a touch more vigilant can help keep you safe.
