Famous Boxing Coach Arrested for DUI | Hawkins Spizman

If you have seen the movie “The Fighter,” you are familiar with Dicky Eklund, the boxing trainer portrayed in the film by Christian Bale. The popular sportsman trained Mickey Ward, who is portrayed in the movie by Mark Wahlberg. The real-life Eklund was pulled over Friday night and ultimately charged with driving under the influence of drugs.

According to reports, police originally pulled Ekland over because they noticed him driving without headlights. Upon approaching the car, officers noticed a smell of alcohol about Eklund’s person, observed his eyes to be glassy and heard that his voice was slurred.

Eklund admitted to officers that he had had a sip of beer prior to driving, but the trainer denied having any prescription medication in his system. He was asked to take field sobriety tests and complied. Officers report that Eklund failed some of those tests.

The trainer has retained an attorney who has said that the man’s speech is always slurred. The attorney also denies that Eklund was driving erratically. Eklund pled not guilty in court on Monday and was held on a $500 bail.

Anyone who has been arrested for driving under the influence in Atlanta or the surrounding area is advised to hire a professional attorney to fight for their rights in court.
