Where Atlanta Ranks on Georgia’s “Safest Cities”
Safehome.org recently released its ranking of the top cities in Georgia with regards to safety. The rankings help people know what to look out for in their neighborhoods and can be helpful for people moving to our state but unsure of which city may be right for them.
Everyone deserves to live in a safe area. People work hard for what they have, and becoming the victim of a crime can take an emotional toll that lasts a lifetime. If you are thinking of moving to Georgia, or just to a new city within the state, here are some of the areas you may want to consider. It should be mentioned, first, that the rankings only include cities that have a population of at least 30,000 people.
1. Peachtree City
Peachtree City is a suburb of Atlanta. There are just over 35,000 people that call this city home. The city falls in the top 5th percentile of all cities in the country in terms of safety. There is one police officer for every 549 citizens, and violent crimes average fewer than 20 per year.
2. Johns Creek
This metropolis is home to just under 85,000 people. It ranks in the 10th percentile of safe cities across the county. Johns Creek is near several major highways, making it popular among those who commute. Property crimes have shown a downward trend in recent years.
3. Milton
A population of nearly 38,000 call Milton home. There were only 12 violent crimes listed as having taken place during the data year, and there are 836 citizens per police officer. Like Johns Creek, property crimes have decreased over the year.
4. Kennesaw
Kennesaw is a popular city located near I-75 and I-575. Even though it ranks number 4 in the safest cities in the state, both violent crimes and property crimes were up this year. Just under 33,000 people live in the city.
5. Roswell
Don’t mistake this Roswell for the one in New Mexico. Nearly 96,000 people live in this large city. Violent crime has risen slightly over this past year, but property crime is down. There are 491 citizens for every police officer.
That rounds out the list of top 5 safest cities in Georgia. Just where did Atlanta rank? The most popular city in Georgia came in at number 23 on a list of 25. That doesn’t make it a terrible city to live in, especially when you consider the number of towns and cities in the state. It still made the top 25 list.
Violent crime and property crime trends were both lower this year. There are 209 citizens for every police officer. That is a good ratio when you consider that there are more than 460,000 people living in the city. Like any area in the country, knowing which neighborhoods are safe and which to avoid would be a good idea if you are thinking of moving to Atlanta proper.
