MARTA Officer Injured in Crash

A driver failed to yield at an intersection in the mid-afternoon on Friday, striking an off-duty Marta police officer. The accident occurred at the intersection of Thompson Drive and Fairburn Road at about 3:30 p.m.

According to reports from Atlanta Police, the off-duty officer was leading a funeral procession on a motorcycle at the time of the accident. It was unknown why the man failed to yield at the intersection, but he was not cooperative with police when they arrived. It was also reported that the driver of the vehicle got into a fight with several witnesses.

Due to the combative nature of the driver, police were unable to complete a field sobriety test on scene. The man was taken into custody and charged with failure to yield, interrupting a funeral procession and an open container violation. A local news station’s helicopter flew over the scene of the accident, capturing video of the officer’s motorcycle lodged part-way under the vehicle.

The officer was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. At last reporting, the officer was in serious but stable condition. Police cannot confirm that the driver of the vehicle was intoxicated at the time of the accident, but it is presumed that he may have been under the influence of alcohol, which may have contributed to the accident.
