Atlanta Officer Facing Charges in Crash

An off-duty police officer in Atlanta stands accused of causing an accident in September. The officer was injured in the crash and a person was killed, but attorneys for the officer are saying that the very injury he suffered requires treatment that could affect his recall of the night’s events.

According to reports, the officer was driving with a 20-year-old passenger in his vehicle. In an apparent road-racing incident, the officer was traveling at a high rate of speed when he strayed from his lane and hit a curb. He then went through an intersection and hit a building. A second driver thought to be involved in the incident was also arrested but quickly posted bond. That person, a woman, is now considered to be only a witness to the events.

Attorneys for the officer say that evidence will show that their client was not taking part in a street race. The officer turned himself in on charges of speeding, racing, reckless driving and vehicular homicide stemming from the September 14 incident. He is set to undergo treatments for the brain injury that he sustained in the incident.

While no trial date has been officially set, it is expected that the case will begin within a month.
