Boy Dies in Tragic Accident at Sun Dial Restaurant
The Sun Dial Restaurant, one of the most well-known restaurants in Atlanta, offers diners a 360 degree view of the city as it slowly rotates clockwise atop the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel. However, that rotating feature was recently the cause of tragedy. A 5-year-old boy became trapped between a table and the rotating wall, causing a fatal head injury.
The boy’s family was visiting Atlanta from North Carolina. The little boy wandered away from his family as they were eating lunch, and became lodged between a table and the wall. The space in which he was caught was only about 4 to 5 inches wide. His head suffered the worst of the injuries.
The Sun Dial’s safety features kicked in, and the rotating wall was automatically shut off. Restaurant security staff and employees were able to get the boy out of the space, and he was rushed to Grady Hospital. However, he later succumbed to the major head trauma he sustained.
The restaurant has been closed until further notice while the Occupational Health and Safety Administration conducts an investigation. This is not the first time the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel has been the site of a tragic wrongful death. Last year, a kitchen worker got locked inside a freezer and died. A few weeks later, a 10-year-old boy fell into the hotel pool and drowned.
