How to Help Hurricane Victims in GA and Beyond

Hurricane Matthew tore its way through Southern Georgia late last week, leaving disaster and turmoil in its wake. Residents continue to face challenges that a storm such as Matthew can bring. Power outages and flooding have changed the lives of Georgia residents, even if temporarily. Unfortunately, Matthew did claim four lives in Georgia. As people are able to assess damage, it is clear that some relief is needed. If you are interested in helping victims in Georgia, here are several options.

American Red Cross

The Red Cross set up 18 shelters in Georgia providing temporary housing to more than 2,000 people. The organization has also deployed trailers containing essentials like food and water. If you are interested in donating to the Red Cross, you can do so by visiting their website.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has put together a strong presence and is providing aid to people in the Carolinas, Florida and Georgia. The organization is providing much needed resources to those affected by the hurricane. If you would like to aid in their efforts, visit this page.

The Humane Society

Pets are often the last beings considered in disasters and severe weather events. The Humane Society of the United States is putting forth an effort to help pets and their families who have been affected by Matthew. Whether providing temporary shelter or sending much needed supplies, the organization is doing what it can to ensure that families are able to properly care for their pets during this trying time.

Any person who is considering donating their money to any relief effort is cautioned to only do so via a reputable organization. The FBI reported that more than 4,000 scam organizations popped up across the Internet in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Do not send money to an organization you have not heard of or cannot verify.

If you or a loved one has been affected by the storm, please reach out to your local Salvation Army or Red Cross for information on how you can receive assistance. There is help available for you and your family.
