Alternatives to Driving Drunk on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is almost upon us. If you are like millions of others across the country, you’ll be celebrating with friends and loved ones as the clock strikes midnight. Many of those celebrations will include adult beverages, whether it’s champagne, beer, wine or liquor. Even if you have just a single drink, you are putting yourself at risk if you get behind the wheel, not to mention the risk you are putting others in.

There are always the traditional options for getting home safely. You can hail a taxi, call for an Uber or even utilize MARTA. All are great options for those who need a sober ride. What you may not be aware of are two other options in the Atlanta metro area: AAA and Woodstock PD. Here are the details.

AAA

For years now, AAA has been offering a program called Tow To Go on major holidays, including New Year’s Eve, but it seems to remain a bit of a secret. The program provides a sober ride home for both members and non-members of AAA. When you call for a ride, a tow truck will transport both you and your vehicle to a destination that is within 10 miles of where you are located.

Here are important guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Tow trucks can typically transport a vehicle and up to two people. If there are more than two people traveling together, another arrangement will have to be made for the rest of the group.

  • Tow To Go does not accept appointments. The service is meant to be utilized by those who did not arrange for a sober driver or who’s sober driver fell through.

  • In certain instances, AAA reserves the right to find an alternate mode of transportation for an individual wishing to use the service.

  • The service may not be available in all areas and in all weather conditions.

Woodstock Police Department

This is the ninth year that the Woodstock Police will be offering people free rides home from local bars. Dubbed “Operation Safe Ride,” the service allows for those who believe they are too intoxicated to drive to call for a sober ride home.

The service is available to anyone who is in an alcohol-serving establishment in Woodstock and lives within a reasonable distance. Partnering with Operation Safe Ride this year will be Neese Towing, who is offering to tow vehicles home for free. Those who choose to utilize the service will be taken home by two officers in a 15-passenger van.

Captain Mark Hand, field operations division commander, said, “The officers enjoy interacting with all of the residents and meeting new people. It is a way for us to get out in the community while making the streets of Woodstock safer.”
