Georgia Politician Charged with DUI

Tom Taylor, a Georgia State Representative, was arrested two weeks ago on suspicion of DUI in Rabun County.

Following his arrest, Taylor registered a blood-alcohol content of .225%, close to three times the legal limit in Georgia of .08%.

According to reports, Taylor was stopped by police at 2:45 p.m. on April 7. Taylor was driving 72 mph in a 45 mph zone. There were four juveniles in the vehicle with the state representative. Officer Michael Bennett stated in his report that Taylor was holding a weapon on his lap. Even though Taylor had a smell of alcohol about his person, he denied that he had been drinking.

The officer stated that Taylor’s face was red and that his eyes were bloodshot. After a consensual search of Taylor’s vehicle was conducted, officers noted that they located an empty water bottle that smelled of alcohol. Taylor did not comply with a field sobriety test. He was ultimately arrested and charged with speeding, possession of an open container and driving under the influence.

Taylor released a statement that said, in part, “I profoundly regret this serious mistake. There’s no one to blame but me, and I greatly appreciate the professionalism of the officers involved. This was my first run-in with the law in my life, and it will be my last.”

No one is above the law, not even state representatives. Taylor’s reputation has been affected by this arrest, and the same could unfortunately happen to you.
