Watch Out for More Cops Looking for Drunk Drivers This Season

As with any holiday, people should expect to see a greater number of law enforcement on the road soon. This holiday season is no different. According to that state, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in order to remind motorists to not drink and drive.

From December 15 through January 2, law enforcement across the state will be attempting to “prevent tragedy before it strikes.” The campaign called Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over is an initiative that aims to keep families safe through the holiday season. The emphasis on the state’s impaired driving laws comes at a time when more people are traveling to visit friends and family and choosing to drive to do so.

Why the Increase in Police Presence?

According to statistics, there were 368 alcohol-related road fatalities in 2016 across the state. That number was 10 times more than the year prior. The numbers also say that nearly a quarter of the traffic deaths in Georgia involved a driver who was under the influence of some type of substance.

The government in the state believes that holidays should be a time for celebration, not times of tragedy. People who choose to partake in adult beverages during the season should designate a sober driver or find another, sober, way home. Officials are quick to point out that there will be no warnings. If someone chooses to drink and drive and are caught, they will be arrested.

Alternatives to Drunk Driving

If you will be going out on the town this season or even to a friend’s house, officials suggest that you:

  • Plan for a sober driver to get you home safely.
  • If it is your turn to be the designated driver, you should take that responsibility very seriously.
  • Take advantage of programs like Uber and Lyft.
  • Download Drive Sober, Georgia onto your smartphone to quickly find sober rides.
  • Be prepared to stop someone from driving if they’ve had too much to drink.
