Winter-Weather Driving is Here
The wintery weather prompted Georgia DOT to issue multiple warnings leading up to the weekend. Crews were out and about on the state’s highways spreading brine in an attempt to prevent as much ice as possible from forming on and sticking to the roadways. The biggest concern for the department was black ice. Motorists were urged to stay home if at all possible on Saturday, not only for their own safety, but to make the departments job easier.
The weekend warnings are unusual for states in the southern part of the country where winters are mild and icy roads aren’t as common as they are in the North. People in the South may not be as familiar with driving on treacherous roads as their neighbors near the Great Lakes. Here are just a few reminders for driving on slick winter roadways:
-
Slow down. You may have 4-wheel Drive that can help you move over ice and snow, but we all have the same (or similar) brakes. Braking over ice and snow is different and can take a greater distance. Slow down when you are driving.
-
Keep the wheel straight. Try to maintain your lane of traffic if at all possible and travel on roads that are more straight than curved.
-
Steer into a slide. If you do find yourself sliding along the road, steer into the slide. It seems counterproductive, but steering into the slide will help you regain control of your wheels.
If you find yourself stuck on the side of the road, stay in your vehicle and call for help.
